Celebrating Los Angeles Theatre

L.A. theatre’s friendliest party is back again! Everyone is invited to Center Theatre Group's third annual Block Party to revel in the incredible people and stages that call our city home. Whether you've made it your mission never to miss a new L.A. play or you feel overwhelmed when you start to think about the 250-plus theatres that surround you, you will find a show you love at the 2019 edition of Block Party. To celebrate all that L.A.'s intimate theatre scene has to offer, we will once again present encore productions from three outstanding companies—showcasing their remarkable work at the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

Mar 28 – Apr 7, 2019

A queer love story about all of us.

New Year’s. Rotterdam, 2018. Alice has finally found the courage to come out to her parents as a lesbian. But before she has the chance, her girlfriend, Fiona, reveals that she has always identified as a man and now wants to live as one, sending their relationship into a tailspin. A bittersweet comedy with deeply human characters, both flawed and hilarious, Rotterdam poses powerful questions about love and identity.

“Rotterdam arrives in Los Angeles in a pitch-perfect staging.” -- Darryl H. Miller, Los Angeles Times

Native Son

Apr 18 – 28, 2019

A searing new adaptation of a contemporary classic about being black in America.

The longing for social justice ignites a palpable rage in Richard Wright’s classic novel, Native Son. Set in 1930s Chicago, where opportunities for African American men like Bigger Thomas are elusive, playwright Nambi E. Kelley’s gripping adaptation focuses on the inner workings of the protagonist’s mind as events violently and irrevocably seal his fate.

“CRITIC’S CHOICE! Electrifying, razor-sharp focus and clarity.” -- Philip Brandes, Los Angeles Times
